THE DESIGNER
KAYLA LOOKINGHORSE

Kayla Lookinghorse is the visionary force behind K.LOOKINGHORSE, an Indigenous-owned fashion brand that elegantly intertwines beauty, resilience, and a profound connection to the rich heritage of the Lakota and Dakota peoples. Her designs are not merely garments; they are narratives that reflect the strength and artistry of her ancestry.

At the heart of K.LOOKINGHORSE lies a signature symbol of the three horizontal lines representing the continuum of past, present, and future. This emblem serves as a tribute to her cultural roots while celebrating the dynamic nature of contemporary fashion. Each collection is a vibrant tapestry of bold designs and monochromatic aesthetics, infused with unmistakable motifs that pay homage to her heritage.

What distinguishes Kayla from other designers is her deep Hunkpapa, Itazipco Lakota, and Dakota lineage, which she seamlessly weaves into every creation. Her designs are a reflection of her unique cultural identity and family traditions, with each piece resonating with the values of her tiospaye (family). The three horizontal lines are not just a design element; they are central to her work, imbuing it with meaning and depth.

As a mother, artist, designer, and tribal citizen, Kayla Lookinghorse forges her own path in the fashion world, creating iconic printed dresses and distinctive jackets. This commitment to Authentic Native American Design is the foundation of the K.LOOKINGHORSE brand, setting a new standard in Native fashion that is inclusive for all.

"My work is about bringing to light the women ancestors whose strength flows through us all. "

In the vibrant tapestry of my work, I weave together the art of porcupine quill-work, bead-work, and traditional techniques of sewing, honoring my ancestors and celebrating the enduring resilience and contributions of Native American peoples. My mission is to cultivate awareness through fashion, reminding the world that Native American culture and heritage remain alive, vital, and essential.

The legacy of my family has profoundly shaped my identity. My great-great-grandmother, Mary Halsey, stood as a powerful advocate and interpreter for the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes in the 1800s. Her dedication to her people paved the way for future generations. My great-grandfather, George Manywounds, served as a Lakota Code Talker during World War II, and in 2013, our family was honored with the Silver Congressional Medal of Honor, recognizing his exceptional service and bravery.

Growing up on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, I was nurtured by my grandparents, Perry Manywounds and Carmelita White Cloud. My grandfather Perry's legacy is one of service; he proudly served in the Army, Air Force, and Navy, and he was an honorable judge for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, advocating for justice and community well-being.

I also spent formative years on the Cheyenne River Reservation, where I was deeply influenced by the land, family and celebrations of life. My paternal grandparents were Stanley and Cecilia Looking Horse. My lala (grandfather) Stanley was a spiritual leader and keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe for the Great Sioux Nation, his teachings were passed down to the current keeper Arvol Lookinghorse. Every day, I find inspiration in reflecting on my identity and heritage as I embark on a creative journey to discover my unique fashion style. It feels like a celebration of duality, as I embrace both my roots and my individuality

Through my designs, I aim to honor this rich heritage, celebrating the stories and spirit of my ancestors while creating a bridge between tradition and contemporary fashion. Each piece is a testament to the strength and beauty of Native American culture, a vibrant reminder that our history is not just a story of the past but a living, breathing legacy that continues to inspire and uplift.

Today, my uncle, Arvol Looking Horse, continues our family’s legacy as the 19th-generation keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and a respected spiritual leader.

His dedication to preserving our way of life and protecting our traditions for future generations deeply inspires me.

In each creation, I strive to honor this legacy and invite others to embrace the beauty, strength, and resilience of Native American culture.

" Native American people walk this earth in balance everyday. To know who we are, is to know where we come from. We are people of the land and hold a space of power. Everyday we pray is another day we make our connection. As a brand we lend ourselves to authenticity and newness. "
